Situated in the central part of the Pearl River Delta (PRD), Shunde is to the south of Guangzhou and to the north of Hong Kong and Macao with an area of 806 k㎡. It is an important part of Guangzhou-Foshan metropolitan circle and Guangdong-Hong Kong Economic Circle. Established in the 3rd year of Jingtai of Ming Dynasty (1452), Shunde currently has jurisdiction over ten towns with a resident population of 3.2686 million(including 1.7243 million registered permanent residents),over 500,000 people who originated from Shunde live in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and foreign countries. In 2024,seeing significant progress made in economic and social undertakings, Shunde  became the champion of China Top 100 Districts  for 13 consecutive years. 

As one of the most concentrated area of the Llingnan culture essence, Shunde is a bright pearl of Lingnan culture with deep historical and cultural details. Shunde is one of the birthplace of Guangdong Tunes and Cantonese opera and was named the hometown of Chinese folk arts in 2007.  with unique architectural culture, many attractions with Lingnan culture accumulated in Shunde such as Qinghui Garden,one of Guangdong's four famous classical gardens, resplendent and magnificent Bijiang Golden House and gorgeously shaped Youtan Huang's great ancestral hall.  Shunde has a long history in food culture, famous all over the world, and enjoys the reputation of City of Gastronomy and Hometown of Chinese Chefs. The annual food festival has become one of the local branding events.Shunde is the cradle of many historical celebrities and talents from the Northern Song Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty, including 3 no.1 scholars in literature(Zhang Zhensun，Huang Shijun and Liang Yaoshu), 1 No.1 scholar in martial arts (Zhu Kezhen),762 metropolitan graduates and 2397 provincial graduates，as well as a new breed of prominent figures as Li Jian,Su Renshan,Bruce Lee, Li Zhaoji, Zheng Yutong, Luo Dingbang,Wu Yisun, Liang Qiuju and Chenfeng Fuzhen.

After more than 40 years’of reform and opening-up, Shunde has unswervingly been bolstering real economy on development based on industry. Two industry clusters of household electrical machinery and machinery equipment come to the fore. Emerging a batch of influential enterprises of hidden champions all over the country and the world, including Midea and Country Garden which listed in Fortune Global 500. Shunde now is one of the nation’s  largest production bases on air conditioner,refrigerator,water heater and sterilized cupboard, and is the largest supply base on rice cooker and microwave oven. Shunde was awarded 28 national brand titles such as Capital of China's home appliances, Capital of China’s gas appliances.

As a pioneer of reform, Shunde founded its first enterprise of three import and compensation Trade and vigorously developed township enterprises, becoming one of the "Four Tigers" in Guangdong in the1980s. In 1992, Shunde was designated as a pilot county (city) for comprehensive reform by Guangdong provincial Party committee and government, taking the lead in promoting comprehensive supporting reform with the reform of property rights system as the core, so as to provide experience exploration and demonstration on basically realizing modernization of Guangdong. In 2009, Shunde was approval as a pilot area on implementing  Scientific Outlook on Development by Guangdong provincial Party committee and government, being the first one to carry out a series of comprehensive reform experiments in terms of the reform of the administrative system, the social system and the reform of community-level governance. In 2018, Shunde was designated by the Leading Group for Comprehensively Deepening Reform of Guangdong Provincial Party Committee as the first experimental zone for the construction of high-quality development system and mechanism reform of Guangdong Province.

At present,  Shunde adheres to the strategy of developing the city based on industry with strong science and technology by virtue of the spirit of taking the lead on reform and innovation. Shunde is striving to create new forms of industrial development, urban construction, ecological civilization, happy life and Party construction work by comprehensively promoting water control campaign, urban construction, talent introduction and city-Industry Integration.
